We all know that eating healthy while being at home is difficult. It only gets worse when you are out of town. I am certainly guilty of wanting to try new restaurants. You get so used to the places that are in your home town, that the idea of having new options is very appealing. Of course we are going to have to try some new places… this is an adventure, right? So, splurge here and there! Just be careful as to not go overboard. Here are some tips for trying to eat in a healthy manner, while you are traveling.
Protein is your friend!
Eating the correct proteins that coincide with how active you are and how much you weigh will help you keep up your energy, help you concentrate and will keep you strong. The best protein regiment would include any animal or dairy product (or a grain) and add in a legume.
Smaller portions, more often!
If you are looking to burn some calories during your long day, small amount of healthy foods, throughout the day, lets your body burn, burn, burn as opposed to eating a high calorie meal in one sitting, which causes your body to store calories as fat. Not to mention… we all know how sluggish and sleepy this can make you.
Think of water as food! Your body needs food! Drinking plenty of water every day can help your body get rid of toxins and can help you eat less. PLUS… you get the added benefit of the things water can do for your skin.
Get A Move On!
We all know how much were on our feet while were working. Keep it up on your days off. This isn’t easy! After working a block of 12 hour days, when I get a day off, all I want to do is lay around and be lazy. Keep up the movement, even if it’s just taking a walk, or using the stairs when you’re coming home. Do you wear a fitness band? Try to out-do your previous weeks number of steps! It can be a challenge, but you’re up for it. Also, many of the hotels we stay at have gyms… use them! Maybe you’re not feeling the cardio, and that’s fine, do a few reps with the weights. I’m not trying to look like Arnold here, but I can certainly use some toning!
It’s not a crock! Pot!
Take your crock-pot with you. You know exactly what is going into your meals when you’re using your crock-pot. Chicken and rice, homemade soups and so many other options. Even steaming veggies in the microwave. You’ve got options!
It all really comes down to the effort. It’s not necessarily easy, but most things that aren’t, are totally worth it and can be beneficial for your health. It’s worth a shot!
