The demand for healthcare workers is more significant than ever. Many healthcare professionals might be looking to work in neighboring states or new places where they’ve never been licensed. The certification process can be intimidating, especially in this time of uncertainty.

We look to the Federation of State Medical Boards for our most current information, but here are some things to keep in mind as you apply for additional states:

• Ask your employer about their requirements. If you are traveling with an agency, they might accept a temporary license or they might require you to attain a complete certification.

• Anticipate longer wait times. Maybe a state has received an influx of applications or portions of the office are working from home, but if you are thinking about getting certified, do it sooner rather than later.

• Call ahead for fingerprints. An office might be by appointment only. They might be waiving the process. They might have cut back on their office hours. Save yourself some time and call in advance.

• Refer to the state you are applying in. Make sure you are looking at their licensing requirements and the documentation you need -- a current ID, a copy of your educational transcripts, etc.
